LSRC Publishes 2006 Civil and Social Justice Survey Report (posted on 27 December 2007) General findings from 2006 data from the Civil and Social Justice Survey are set out in the 2006 Civil and Social Justice Survey Report. The report is the first annual report of the continuous Civil and Social Justice Survey and includes sections on the incidence of civil justice problems, the experience of multiple problems, problem resolution strategiea, outcomes, attitudes to the civil justice system and the experience of people who are eligible for legal aid. Pascoe Pleasence on Sabbatical from the LSRC (posted on 27 December 2007) Pascoe Pleasence, Head of the LSRC, is to take a sabbatical from the LSRC in 2008, returning to post from 1st January 2009. Alexy Buck will be Acting Head of the LSRC in his absence. LSRC Publishes 'Findings of the Legal Advice Sector Workforce Survey' (posted on 30 September 2007) 'Findings of the Legal Advice Sector Workforce Survey' sets out key findings from the European Social Fund funded Legal Advice Sector Workforce Survey, Survey of Attitudes of Publicly Funded Legal Advice Workers and a related Organisational Survey. The report provides a general description of the composition of the legal advice sector, methods of delivery, attitudes of advice sector workers and identifies recruitment and retention problems and skills gaps within the sector. LSRC Report on the Experience of Rights Problems of Older People Published by Age Concern (posted on 30 September 2007) A report setting out Civil and Social Justice Survey findings relating to older people aged 50 or over has been published by Age Concern. LSRC Provide Report to the PLEAS Task Force (posted on 23 June 2007) A report setting out Civil and Social Justice Survey findings relating to the work of the PLEAS (Public Legal Education and Support) Task Force has been published by the Task Force and is available as an annexe to their final report. The report is available for download from the PLEAS Task Force website, at www.pleas.org.uk. Alexy Buck, Deputy Head of the LSRC, also presented the findings at the International Legal Aid Group conference in Antwerp in June 2007. The conference brings together legal aid experts from around the world, including CEOs, a number of other policy makers, and researchers and academics. Seventh LSRC International Research Conference Announced (posted on 7 June 2007) The seveth LSRC International Research Conference will be held on the historic site of the Royal Naval College in Greewich, London, from the 26th to 28th March 2008. The conference title will be 'Reaching Further: New Approaches to the Delivery of Legal Services'. The conference will provide a platform for new evidence relating to the provision of publicly funded legal services, with a particular focus on users and potential users of legal services. A formal call for papers will go out later in the Summer of 2007, although proposals may be submitted prior to the call. Following the success of the anthology of 2006 conference papers, it is again intended to publish the best conference papers following the event. Head of LSRC Appointed to UCL Chair (posted on 7 June 2007) Professor Pascoe Pleasence, Head of the Legal Services Research Centre (LSRC), has been appointed to the Chair of Empirical Legal Studies at University College London (UCL). The appointment sees him become Co-Director of the Centre for Empirical Legal Studies at UCL, a centre set up in light of the Nuffield enquiry on empirical legal studies to contribute to building up the research base, and interest, in this area of study. The position at UCL is part-time and is one he will hold in parallel to his position as Head of the LSRC. Anthology of Papers LSRC Conference Papers Published (posted on 21 May 2007) An anthology of peer reviewed papers, first presented at the LSRC's International Research Conference in Belfast in 2006, has been published by TSO. The anthology, entitled Transforming Lives: Law and Social Process, includes papers from authors from the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada and the United States. The papers - investigating the social context of legal problems, the social context of problem resolution strategies, the impact of problems on individuals and wider society, the accessibility of legal services and the funding of legal services - provide a range of perspectives on some of the central issues relating to the link between law and social process. They also detail important new findings from a number of empirical legal studies, employing a variety of methodologies, that delve deep into the experience of both those who are affected by and who give effect to law. Final Report of the Impact of Debt Advice Research Project and First Stage Report of the Money Advice Outreach Pilot Evaluation (posted on 17 March 2007) The final report of the Impact of Debt Advice Research Project and the first stage report of the Money Advice Outreach Pilot Evaluation will be published on 23rd March 2007. The first of these reports will set out findings from the 2004 Civil and Social Justice Survey, a series of follow-up qualitative interviews with respondents to the 2004 survey who reported debt problems, a longitudinal study of clients of advice agencies and a pioneering randomised control trial of debt advice. Separate detailed papers on the qualitative interviews, the longitudinal study (being managed by the DCA's research unit), and the control trial will follow later in the year. More details of the study can be found by clicking here. The first stage report of the Debt Outreach Pilot Evaluation will set out findings from an in-depth survey of debt advice outreach locations. It will describe the people who attend them, their experience of debt problems, their need for advice, their use of traditional advice services and their attitudes to outreach advice. LSRC Presentation Accompanies Airing of Short Films Highlighting the Problems of Legal Advice Provision in Rural Areas (posted on 17 March 2007) Professor Pascoe Pleasence and Dr. Nigel Balmer of the LSRC gave the opening presentation at the Legal Services Commission's 'Legal Advice - The Way Ahead for Rural and Coastal Communities' conference at the Eden Project, Cornwall, on 13th March 2007. In addition to the presentation, the conference was host to the first screening of a series of short films, produced by the LSRC, aimed at illustrating issues of rural justice. In all, 5 short films were commissioned for the conference by the South West Region of the Legal Services Commission. The films drawn on interviews conducted with Cornish advisors and clients. Youth Access to Publish LSRC Report on the Experience of Civil Justice Problems Reported by Younger Respondents to the 2004 Civil and Social Justice Survey (posted on 11 February 2007) An article, authored by Dr. Nigel Balmer, Dr. Tania Tam and Professor Pascoe Pleasence of the LSRC, exploring the incidence, impact of and reaction to civil justice problems affecting 18 to 24 year old respondents to the 2004 Civil and Social Justice Survey will be published on 15th February 2007. Youth Justice Article Published (posted on 19 October 2006) An article, jointly authored by Dr. Vicky Kemp of the LSRC and Professor
Sir Anthony Bottoms of the Institute of Criminology at the University
of Cambridge, has been published in an anthology of papers examining current
issues concerning youth justice and child protection. The paper explores
the relationship between youth justice and child welfare. Causes of Action published in Japan (posted on 19 October 2006) Causes of Action is now available in Japanese translation from the Japan Legal Aid Association.
